Most people are more familiar with fossil fuel furnaces rather than heat pumps. A furnace generates heat in a traditional way by burning a fuel such as oil or natural gas and sending the resulting heat into the home through insulated duct work.
Heat pumps don’t generate heat from a fuel source. Instead, they use electricity to operate a compressor and refrigerant in a sealed circuit to absorb and transfer heat from outdoors and into the home. When a heat pump is in the heating mode, heat pumps work like an air conditioner, only in reverse. Instead of absorbing warm air from inside the home and thermally rejecting it outside, the heat pump is absorbing heat from outside and rejecting it inside. The heat pump is able to do this even if the outdoor temperatures are below freezing as there is still heat present.
Older model furnaces were known for being inefficient, but new technology has resulted in impressive rates of up to 98.6% efficiency. This means only a small percent of the fuel burned escapes with the combustion process.
Heat pumps move heat using electricity and they are significantly more efficient in operation than cadet heat, baseboard heat and electric furnace heat with heating seasonal performance factors of up to 13. There are even incentive programs to help purchase heat pumps to conserve energy.
A traditional gas furnace may be the best choice if you have access to or currently have natural gas. Our furnaces can also run off of propane with a conversion kit.
If natural gas isn't available at your home, a heat pump may be your best choice. Electricity tends to be more expensive than natural gas, but because heat pumps work so efficiently, you’ll save money with an electric heat pump compared to an electric furnace.
For ultimate efficiency a heat pump and a gas furnace can be paired together to form whats called a dual fuel system. This system will save the most money annually.
